Conventional laptops are bulky and therefore feel too heavy to carry. If you are considering ditching your old laptop, the Apple iPad Air can be a good replacement. The brand recently launched a handful of much-awaited tablets including the sixth-generation iPad Air, which is 5,500 costlier than the 2022 iPad Air. What new features does the 2024 iPad Air offer compared to the 2022 model, and which one should you buy? To answer this, here is a comparison between new and old iPad Air:
Apple iPad Air Old Vs New: Design
While both 5th-Gen and 6th-Gen appear similar, the front-facing camera on the latter has been moved to the longer area to provide landscape mode, more suitable for video calls.
The 2022 iPad Air features a 10.9-inch display, while the new model is offered in two sizes: 11-inch and 13-inch. Still, the dimensions of the new 11-inch iPad Air and the old device remain the same. The look and feel of the new model is similar to that of the 2022 iPad Air.
Performance
Performance is where the big difference lies between the new iPad Air and the old model. Powering the 2022 iPad Air is the M1 chip, the first one developed in-house by Apple, while the 2024 iPad Air now gets the M2 chipset. Apple claims that the M2 is 50% faster than the M1 in some tasks.
The M1chip features an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU, while the M2 offers an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. Both tablets get 8GB of RAM. One can notice the performance difference between the two during resource-intensive tasks like video editing. However, both the chipsets perform more or less the same when multitasking.
Storage
The iPad Air 2024 offers more storage with the base variant offering 128GB and the top model boasting 1TB. On the other hand, the two variants of the iPad Air 2022 offer 64GB and 256GB.

Apple Pencil And Keyboard Case
The 5th-Gen iPad Pro comes with the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil, on the other hand, the 6th-Gen model now gets the newly-launched Apple Pencil Pro. While the prices of both remain the same, the new Apple Pencil Pro boasts additional features such as Find My, Barrel roll, and Squeeze. Therefore, those who love designing can go with the new iPad Air.
However, the new iPad Air misses out on the Smart Keyboard Folio case, which is available with the 2022 model. Thus, if connecting the keyboard to your tablet is a must requirement for you, then you should choose the old model.
Apple iPad Air Old Vs New: Which One You Should Choose?
Although the old iPad Air cannot be termed as outdated, its base variant comes with only 64GB of internal storage. This should be sufficient for those who simply want to install several apps, play games and watch offline movies.
The 2022 iPad Air is currently listed on Amazon India and other e-commerce platforms for Rs 55,400, while prices of the new 11-inch model start from Rs 59,900.
The 2022 model undoubtedly offers great value for money, but if you seek more performance and extra storage space at an additional Rs 5,500, you can choose the new 11-inch iPad Air.
