New Delhi: Apple has been cutting production targets for its recently-launched mixed-reality Vision Pro headset. The company is facing difficulties in producing the complex design of the device, as per a report provided to the financial express.
The report states that iPhone maker is all set to prepare to make fewer than 400,000 units of the $3,499 device in 2024.
Citing unidentified people with direct knowledge of the manufacturing process, the report further adds that Apple has postponed its plans for a more affordable version.
Two unidentified suppliers of Vision Pro components from China separately said that Apple only requested enough parts for 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year, the paper said.
Both indicate a sharp reduction from the previous internal sales target of 1 million units in the first 12 months, the FT reported.
Apple unveiled the new Vision Pro headset at its annual WWDC developer conference last month. The headset includes external cameras that allow users to interact with digital content in mixed reality.
In terms of detail, Vision Pro comes to the home view, a floating set of icons with Apple’s most used apps, including Mail, Music, Messages and Safari, when users put on the headset. The new product also requires no drivers or hardware.
It can track eyes and highlight a preferred icon when users look at a particular icon. The Apple Vision Pro is powered by the Apple M2 chip, which features a new chip called the R1, especially for sensor processing. The product comes with 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones.
The headset is equipped with an authentication system called Optic ID that can be paired with the keyboard. Apple claims it can be used with Iris, data is encrypted and it works with Secure Enclave.
The Apple Vision Pro is priced at $3,499 and is currently available in the US.
