The discontinuation of entry-level 1GB mobile data plans has come under scrutiny from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). As per reports, the DoT has raised concerns after two of the biggest telecom operators discontinued their most affordable data plans and simultaneously hiked tariffs.
Going beyond just raising concerns, the Department of Telecommunications has now directed TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to look into the matter and submit a report.
Jio and Airtel’s Official Reply
As reported by Mint, the telecom operators stated that the 1GB data plans were discontinued after analyzing user preferences. Jio also noted that it removed the plan based on prevailing market conditions, and clarified that some discontinued packs are still available through offline stores, the report added.
Airtel also discontinued its ₹249 plan, stating it was a decision made after analyzing market dynamics in order to increase value for customers. To help customers choose better here are a few affordable and easily accessible plans you can go for.
Jio Rs 1,799 Plan
Jio’s ₹1,799 plan offers 84 days of validity and includes 3GB of daily data. Additionally, any plan that includes 2GB data or more per day comes with unlimited 5G data access. The pack also offers 100 SMS per day, unlimited calling across all networks, and Netflix Basic subscription, along with JioTV access. As part of special offers celebrating Jio’s 9th anniversary, users also get a 2-month trial of Jio Home, and an extra 2% on Jio Gold.
Vodafone Idea Rs 1,749 Plan
With this plan, users get 1.5GB of daily data, and in addition, 30GB of separate data valid for 45 days. This effectively means users receive extra data beyond the daily cap. The plan includes 100 SMS per day, and offers 100 days more validity than Jio’s plan. Users also benefit from the ‘Binge All Night’ feature and weekend data rollover. However, Vi’s plans do not include any complimentary OTT subscriptions, unlike Jio’s offering.
