Apple officially announced the AirPods Pro 3 at its much-anticipated annual ‘Awe Dropping’ event at Apple Park in Cupertino on Tuesday, September 9. The AirPods Pro 3 were the first announcement at the event.
Tim Cook started with Apple AirPods and said: We are starting with AirPods. “They raise the bar for what headphones should be.”
Apple has introduced a new heart rate monitor and better active noise cancellation (ANC), as well as a live translation feature. AirPods can be preordered today for $249, with shipping commencing on September 19.
The audio quality has also received an upgrade in the AirPods Pro 3 with the sound stage now widened. according to Apple, the foam-infused ear tips for greater noise isolation will allow AirPods Pro 3 offer the “world’s best ANC.” The tech giant claims this will deliver twice the ANC than the previous generation and “deliver the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones.”
The heart rate sensor is probably the biggest upgrade the AirPods Pro 3 have received and it also uses Apple’s smallest heart rate sensor, a custom photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, that “shines invisible infrared light pulsed at 256 times per second to measure light absorption in blood flow.”
The sensor works in coordination with the AirPods Pro GPS, gyroscope, accelerometers, and a on-device AI model on an iPhone and keeps track of your activity, calories burned, and heart rate.
Apple has also introduced a new live translation feature. The ANC will reduce the speaker volume and play it in your own language.
“When enabled, Live Translation helps users understand another language and communicate with others by speaking naturally with AirPods,” explains Apple. “To interact with someone who doesn’t have this hands-free capability, there’s an option to use iPhone as a horizontal display, showing the live transcription of what the user is saying in the other person’s preferred language.”
Apple has also worked on making the AirPods Pro 3 fit more comfortably. The company studied over 10,000 3D ear scans and redesigned the earbuds to be smaller and sit better in the ear canal. They now come with five sizes of ear tips to suit different ears. Plus, they’re tougher too, with IP57-rated resistance against sweat and water.
