Virat Kohli’s much-anticipated return to international cricket in Indian colours didn’t go as fans had hoped. The star batter, who was coming off a long break, was dismissed for a duck in the first ODI against Australia in Perth. It was a familiar sight – Mitchell Starc angled one across him, and Kohli nicked it behind, falling to an old weakness outside the off stump.
After spending quality time with his family in London, many expected a refreshed Kohli to light up the series. But his comeback innings ended before it even began.
Ponting Criticises, But Also Encourages Kohli
Former Australian captain and cricket great Ricky Ponting didn’t hold back in his assessment of Kohli’s poor outing, but he also offered support and optimism for the Indian legend.
Speaking on the ICC Review, Ponting admitted that Kohli’s return was disappointing but urged fans not to lose hope. He believes Kohli still has a lot to offer, especially on Australian soil.
“The one thing I don’t like hearing from players is, ‘I’ve achieved everything,’” Ponting said. “You still need short-term goals. You can’t just be holding on until the 2027 World Cup.”
Ponting encouraged Kohli to find motivation from the ongoing series instead of only looking ahead to future tournaments.
“Virat has always been highly driven,” Ponting continued. “I’d like to believe he’s set some personal goals for this series in Australia. He can’t just be waiting around for the next World Cup, he needs to be performing now.”
Rhythm Will Return With Time
Ponting, who knows a thing or two about comebacks and form slumps, also pointed out how difficult it can be for even the best players to get back into rhythm after a break.
“The biggest challenge after time off is regaining rhythm and match tempo,” he explained. “That’s true for anyone – not just Kohli. I expect both him and others to find their groove soon.”
He also noted that conditions in Adelaide, where the second ODI will be played, usually favour batters and could give Kohli a perfect opportunity to find his touch again.
“Adelaide’s a great place to bat, but facing this Australian pace attack won’t be easy. Still, I back Kohli – champions always find a way.”
“You Never Write Off Champions”
Despite the failure in Perth, Ponting strongly backed Kohli’s place in India’s long-term plans and praised his career in the ODI format.
“You never write off champion players,” Ponting said. “Kohli and [Rohit] Sharma have been two of the best. And I’ve said it before – I think Kohli is the best 50-over player I’ve ever seen.”
He added that if Kohli can rediscover his form, there’s no reason he won’t be a key part of India’s squad for the 2027 World Cup.
Kohli will have the chance to turn things around when India take on Australia in the second ODI at Adelaide on October 23. With pressure building and fans eager to see him at his best again, all eyes will be on how the former India captain responds.
