The Indian Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh at home was announced on Sunday, September 8. Rohit Sharma will be leading the side, which has star batter Virat Kohli who is considered to be the backbone of India’s batting lineup. Rishabh Pant returns to the Test team, with pacer Yash Dayal getting his maiden-ever call-up.

During the IPL 2023 season, Yash Dayal found himself in the spotlight, though not for the reasons he would have preferred. In a match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Gujarat Titans’ left-arm pacer Dayal was targeted by Rinku Singh, who unleashed a series of boundaries. Rinku struck Dayal for five consecutive sixes, leaving both him and his team in shock. Compounding the situation, Dayal’s mother fell ill and refused to eat after the game. Despite this setback, Dayal did not falter. He has made a remarkable comeback, earning his maiden call-up to the Indian Test squad.

Dayal Earns Maiden Call-Up To India’s Test Squad

The now 26-year-old Dayal has been selected in the 16-man squad for the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh starting September 19. The selection underlines his perseverance and ability and counts as a major milestonr in his career. Having made his first-class debut in 2018, Dayal has gone on to play 24 matches, claiming 76 wickets at an average of 28.89. He claimed 4 wickets for India B against India A in the 2024 Duleep Trophy opener and also had a high-end IPL 2024 season with RCB, snaring 15 wickets in 14 matches.

The Indian Test season will kick off with the series-opening first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 22, followed by the series’ second Test, which will be held at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur from September 27 to October 1. Thus far, the two teams have played 13 Test matches, with India taking the honors in 11 and two ending in draws. Bangladesh arrive for the series buoyed by a historic 2-0 series win over Pakistan, while India arrive in their first Test series since the 4-1 win over England earlier this year.
