CM Punk has a statement to make regarding the retirement of John Cena. After his match on December 13, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Cena will not be the in-ring WWE wrestler anymore. Punk also appeared on the Up and Adams Show, and in this episode, he said that Cena was retiring and he compared WWE superstar to Ice Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Additionally, he appeared a little bit emotional as he said that he is happy to see Cena retire.
CM Punk’s Statement
“Cena is, I think, our Wayne Gretzky. I’ve been saying he’s somebody who’s just kind of held it down for a very, very long time.
And for him to wrap it up, I think, is like watching him exit with such style and grace and dignity has been has been a real treat.
We don’t get to often say goodbye in real time to our sports heroes, so this is the one time we can,” Punk said.

CM Punk Reveals Why Gunther Is the Best Choice for Cena’s Farewell Match
In the same program, CM Punk was questioned about who he would choose as Cena’s last sparring partner. Punk said that Gunther would be the most suitable choice to put an end to The Last Real Champion’s career.
“I don’t know if it’s perfect, but it’s looking like Gunther because I’ve been in the ring with him, and I know what he can do, and I don’t know who else in the tournament can beat him right now,” Punk said.

Gunther’s Comeback Gains Momentum
Gunther made his comeback to WWE on the November 17, 2025, edition of Monday Night after being out of action since his defeat at the hands of CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam in August 2025. Apart from his loss, he suffered a real nose injury that kept him away from wrestling for a while. His match after the comeback was against Je’Von Evans in the Last Time Is Now tournament, which he won. In the next episode of Raw, he will have already defeated Carmela Hayes to continue in the tournament. Moreover, Solo Sikoa had also just defeated Penta to become a semi-finalist in the tournament this past Monday.
