England managed one of the most resounding Test victories on Friday, October 10 when it defeated Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs on the last day of the first Test in Multan. Having posted a sensational first-innings aggregate of 823-7, marked by the magnificent triple hundred from Harry Brook and Joe Root’s career-best 262, England shut the door on Pakistan’s hopes of a comeback with piercing bowling. Pakistan crumbled to 220 in their second innings despite a spirited effort from a determined partnership between Salman Ali Agha and Aamer Jamal; 63 for and 55* respectively. The tourists were done in early by the accuracy and wily guile of Jack Leach, who claimed 4 wickets for 30. The defeat is a new historic low for Pakistan – they became the first team in history to lose by an innings after they amassed over 500 in their first innings.
A New Low For Pakistan
This defeat in the World Test Championship propels Pakistan’s woes further down the standings as India continues to produce consistent performances along with magnificent test victories that places the country at the top of the WTC table. Pakistan remains on the bottom as the country has won just two tests of eight. Captain Shan Masood’s sixth successive test defeat has, practically, derailed the country’s hopes of entry into the WTC final. The match also represents the sixth successive Test defeat for Pakistan and their seventh consecutive loss at home in the last eleven matches, which strengthens the notion that they are struggling in the longest version of the game.
