Indian captain Rohit Sharma is reported to be opted out from the IND vs AUS 5th Test set to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Indian team currently trail in the five-match series by 1-2 and will look forward to leveling the series. Rohit is currently undergoing a poor phase wherein the Indian team hasn’t won a single match under his leadership in the last six Tests. On the other hand, the latter has only scored 31 runs from three games in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Rohit’s captaincy and decisions also came under scrutiny which has kept him in the eyes of the trolls.

Ravi Shastri’s Blunt Take On Rohit Sharma’s ‘Possible’ Retirement
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri gave a blunt opinion on Rohit Sharma’s future and stated that he won’t be surprised if he retires after the Sydney Test. Speaking to ICC, it is Rohit’s call to decide about his future but his retirement won’t shock him as he is not getting younger. He said, “He’ll take a call on his career but I won’t be shocked at all (if Sharma retires) because he’s not getting younger. There are other young players in the wings, there’s Shubman Gill, a player of his quality averaging over 40 in the year 2024 and not playing. It tricks your brain as to what is he doing sitting on the bench and warming it. So I won’t be surprised but it’s his call.”

Ravi Shastri further added that if the Indian team had qualified for the World Test Championship final but otherwise it will just be an opportunity for Rohit Sharma to go out and play his last Test match. He said, “At the end of the day, if India had qualified for the World Test Championship (Final) or if they still qualify for the World Test Championship Final, then it’s another thing altogether. Otherwise, I think it might just be the opportune time – but (if Sharma plays) he should go out with a blaze of glory.”
The Indian team must win the Sydney Test if they wish to give themselves a chance of making it to the final of the World Test Championship. However, there future will depend upon Sri Lanka where they would like them to defeat Australia in both the Tests.
