Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was one of the first to shower accolades on Jannik Sinner after the young Italian won his first-ever Wimbledon championship on Sunday, ousting Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz in an intense four-set final. The 23-year-old Sinner produced a masterclass in calmness and accuracy to claim a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, earning a fourth Grand Slam title for himself two Australian Open and one US Open thus far.

Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tendulkar eulogized the match’s quality and sportsmanship on offer. “A match worthy of a Wimbledon Final, both Sinner and Alcaraz kept pushing the best out of each other. Congratulations, Sinner, you are part of an exclusive club today. Well played, Alcaraz, many more finals your way,” wrote the cricket great.

Sinner, in his maiden Wimbledon final, played with nerves of steel after losing the first set. Alcaraz opened up with fire, employing his signature blistering groundstrokes and crafty drop shots to dominate. The Spaniard demonstrated typical determination, fighting back from 2-4 in the first set to win it with an incredible backhand block.

But Sinner was undaunted. He answered back by driving the next three sets home with thrilling rallies and bursts of brilliance. His solid baseline game and perfect timing disrupted Alcaraz’s flow and gave him control of the match.

It’s been quite the ride for Sinner this year at the Championships. He lost a mere 17 games through his first three matches before edging past a scare in the fourth round when Grigor Dimitrov, who was leading, was forced to retire with injury. Subsequently, he fought through a painful elbow and rugged matchups with Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic to get his fifth career Grand Slam final.

Having secured the victory, Sinner only had praise for his rival. During his on-court comments, he complimented Alcaraz for taking him to the wire. “Carlos, another incredible tournament from you. It’s never easy to play against you. But we’ve created something special on and off the court and I know that we will keep driving each other.”. You’ve already won two Slams, and I’m sure you’ll be lifting this trophy many more times,” Sinner said, as quoted by the ATP.

Sinner’s triumph marks a significant moment in his blossoming career, and if this final is anything to go by, tennis fans can expect many more thrilling battles between these two young stars in the years to come.
