Indian cricket has seen big changes in the past year. After stepping away from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit Sharma has now been replaced as India’s ODI captain. The captaincy baton has been passed to young star Shubman Gill, who will now lead the team in the upcoming ODI series against Australia.
This major change has left many fans wondering – will Rohit’s salary drop now that he’s no longer captain?
The answer is no. Rohit Sharma’s BCCI salary will not be affected.
BCCI Central Contracts: Captaincy Doesn’t Matter
The BCCI pays its players through a central contract system based on performance and consistency – not captaincy. Players are divided into four grades:
- Grade A+ – Rs 7 crore/year
- Grade A – Rs 5 crore/year
- Grade B – Rs 3 crore/year
- Grade C – Rs 1 crore/year
Rohit remains in the Grade A+ category, which means he will continue earning Rs 7 crore annually, just like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill, now India’s ODI captain, is in Grade A, earning Rs 5 crore a year.
So, being captain doesn’t affect a player’s contract value – it’s all about which grade they’re placed in by the BCCI.
Rohit’s Legacy Is Bigger Than the Armband
While losing captaincy might feel like a setback, it doesn’t take away from Rohit’s legendary status. In fact, he’s had a stellar few years as captain:
- Led India to win the 2024 T20 World Cup
- Captained India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy
- Took India to the ODI World Cup final in 2023, finishing as runners-up
Rohit Sharma: A Brand Beyond Cricket
