Jannik Sinner has received a lot of criticism in Italy after he confirmed that he will not represent the national team in the upcoming Davis Cup final 8. The World No, 2 has played a crucial role in the Italy’s Davis Cup win in 2023 and 2025 following which he stated that he needs to prioritise his preparation for the next season instead of participating in the title race scheduled in Bologna next month.
There was already a speculation about Sinner missing the Davis Cup a few weeks ago and after the news was confirmed by the Italian Federation, the criticism started to pour in. The ive-member squad was also announced which included – with Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini, Simone Bolelli, and Andrea Vavassori.

The Italian Tennis great Nicola Pietrangeli, labelled the decision of Sinner’s withdrawal as “a huge slap in the face for Italian sport.” Pietrangeli expressed his hope that Sinner would not have any other engagements during the Davis Cup period. Italian media outlets also went harsh on the 24-year old, La Gazzetta dello Sport ran a front-page headline which read – “Sinner, think it over again,” asking him to re-think his decision with an editorial.
Now Sinner has finally addressed the controversy and stated that he needs off-season to recover and reset.
“I’ve won the Davis Cup twice. My team and I made this decision because the end of the season is very long, and I need an extra week off to start training earlier.

“The goal is to be in top shape for Australia. Over the last two years, I haven’t been at my best due to a lack of time, so we decided this was the right move.” Sinner mentioned speaking to Sky Sports Italy
