Why India’s Clash With Australia Could Make Or Break Their World Cup Journey

India must beat Australia to guarantee a semifinal spot in the Women's T20 World Cup, with various scenarios at play.

ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, Ind vs Aus: With just two matches left, Group A is almost coming to a close. The Sunday match features India against Australia in Sharjah, while on Monday, New Zealand will clash with Pakistan in Dubai. These two matches will select the first two teams that will reach the semifinals.

India’s Journey So Far

Next came the humiliating 58-run loss to New Zealand in the tournament opener. Here they were at the crossroads. Initially, they got the wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but as we speak, winning alone was not enough for this team. For instance, India’s comprehensive win over Sri Lanka also improved their net run rate to +0.576, which placed them second in the points table.

Currently, Australia holds the top position with six points and a terrific NRR of +2.786 while New Zealand lags with four points and an NRR of +0.282.

Qualification Scenario

If India Beats Australia
The good thing for India is that they will at least be assured of a semifinal position if they can win against Australia. If they emerge victorious, they will garner six points. When they inflict a defeat by a margin of 61 runs or more, they will surpass Australia’s NRR and possibly sit atop the group.

However, if India manages a smaller victory, they might be in a tricky situation since three teams can end up with six points. So India would be depending on either Pakistan winning its final match against New Zealand or New Zealand winning by a narrow margin to help them out.

If India Loses To Australia

If India loses to Australia, that would leave them with four points, and that leaves their chances of entry into the semifinals highly uncertain. At that stage, they would start banking on a New Zealand defeat at the hands of Pakistan to ensure some hope for an entry into the semifinals. If New Zealand wins, it’s curtains for India in the event.
