Who replaces Shubman Gill? THESE two contenders will fight for his spot in 2nd Test

Shubman Gill’s injury leaves India in a tough spot before the Guwahati Test. With the captain out, selectors must pick between Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal to counter Simon Harmer’s spin.

IND vs SA 2nd Test: Shubman Gill’s neck injury has suddenly thrown India’s plans into chaos. What initially looked like a minor spasm during the first Test in Kolkata has now become a serious concern, especially after a clip surfaced showing the India captain in a neck brace and struggling to walk comfortably.

Gill didn’t return to bat in the second innings, India collapsed in a modest chase of 124, and now there’s no clarity on whether he’ll recover in time for the second Test in Guwahati starting November 22.

If Gill is ruled out, India will need a quick, sensible replacement at the top. And that brings us to the two likeliest options in the squad – Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal.

Padikkal vs Sudharsan: Who’s the Better Fit?

On paper, the difference is marginal. Padikkal has a slightly stronger first-class record of 3199 runs in 49 matches at an average of 41, compared to Sudharsan’s 2562 runs in 38 matches at 39.

Experience, too, is comparable. Sudharsan has already featured in five Tests, while Padikkal yet to make statement in the longest format.

But the bigger question is this: who is better equipped to handle Simon Harmer, the South African off-spinner who dismantled India with eight wickets in Kolkata?

Against right-arm spinners in Tests:

  • Sudharsan: 46 runs off 77 balls, out twice – average 23
  • Padikkal: 26 runs, out once – average 26

Not much to separate them there either.

So Who Gets the Nod?

In situations like this, numbers don’t tell the full story. What might actually tilt the balance is trust.

Sudharsan has already been backed by this team management in England, in the West Indies, and now again in this squad. That continuity matters. Coaches generally prefer the player who has already been in their system, understands their roles, and has handled pressure at the international level.

Padikkal isn’t far behind, but Sudharsan feels like the safer, more familiar choice.

A Tough Call Before a Must-Win Test

With India trailing 0-1 and staring at a possible home series defeat, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Gill’s absence would be a huge blow, but picking the right replacement could decide how India begin the fightback in Guwahati.

For now, all eyes remain on Gill’s recovery and on Sudharsan and Padikkal, who may be just one team meeting away from a crucial Test opportunity.
