Indian table tennis star Sreeja Akula is making waves on the international stage once again. The 26-year-old has reached the finals of the WTT Contender Lagos 2025, following a string of outstanding performances that included a stunning win over tournament top seed Prithika Pavade of France by 3-2.

Strong Show in Lagos
After her upset victory over Hayata, Sreeja continued her brilliant form on Friday with two more impressive wins. In the round of 16, she faced Italian Debora Vivarelli and, despite losing the first game 9-11, bounced back to win the next three games 11-9, 11-3, and 11-1.
In the quarterfinal, Sreeja faced Portugal’s Jieni Shao and dominated the match, winning in straight games: 11-7, 11-7, 11-7. With these victories, she has secured her place in the final.
Brilliance in Commonwealth Games 2022
Sreeja Akula is no stranger to the big stage. She was part of India’s table tennis team that made the country proud at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, where she won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event. Her remarkable performance brought her national attention and recognition.
Following the victory, Sreeja was felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi, along with other athletes. Speaking about the honour, she shared:

Indian Success Continues in Lagos

It’s been a good tournament for Indian players overall at the WTT Contender Lagos. In the men’s doubles, the pair of G. Sathiyan and Akash Pal have reached the final, where they will face France’s Leo de Nodrest and Jules Rolland.
However, both Sathiyan and Pal were eliminated in their men’s singles matches by the same French duo. Pal lost to de Nodrest in four games, while Sathiyan was beaten by Rolland in straight sets.
In the mixed doubles, Akash Pal teamed up with Poymantee Baisya and reached the final. They finished as runners-up after losing 1-3 to Rolland and Pavade.
