Birmingham: 4 Indian women-Lovely, Pinki, Rupa, Nayanmoni have got their hands on gold medal, the first ever of India.

The slogan of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jay’ echoed in ground after the win of Indian women in Birmingham. The dreams of the four women have come true with the win and their game will continue to inspire Indian players for many years to come.

Who is Rupa Rani Tirkey?

Another athlete in the women’s fours team from Ranchi, Rupa Rani has represented India in every Commonwealth Games since the 2010 edition in Delhi.

She finished a commendable 4th in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, missing out on a medal by a whisker before finishing 5th in 2018 at Gold Coast.

Rani played kabaddi when young, and similarly drifted towards Lawn Bowls. Rupa’s father worked in a post office, and after him, later her mother took over the same job. Her sister Reema Rani Tirkey plays cricket.

Who is Nayanmoni Saiki?

Nayanmoni Saikia was born to a family of farmers in Assam. The athlete started her lawn bowls career in 2008 and is employed by the Assam Forest Department. Nayanmoni shot to fame with two gold medals in the 2011 National Games in Ranchi. She doubled her national games medal tally in 2015 before also winning an Asian Championships gold in 2017 in Delhi.

Who is Lovely Choubey?

Lovely Choubey used to be a 100m sprinter. The athlete shifted to a slow sport like Lawn Bowl due to injuries. Lovely’s father was a fourth-class employee who couldn’t afford the expenses of her sport, so her trainer put her into training which led to a severe injury to her hips. Lovely shifted to long jumping which she soon quit.

Choubey was invited by Bihar’s then cricket umpire Madhukant Pathak to try out lawn bowls. In 2008, Lovely Choubey made her national debut in which she bagged a gold medal.

Upon winning a gold medal, she won an amount of Rs.70k from the state government. In a conversation with a media house. Lovely stated that this monetary award motivated her to continue with the sport in 2008.

Lovely Choubey participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, SCO, and competed in Women’s Triples and Women’s Fours events and was ranked in 3rd Pool and 4th Pool, respectively. In the same year, she clinched two silver medals in Women’s Pairs and Singles at the 10th Asian Lawn Bowls Championships.

Who is Pinki?

A physical education teacher in Delhi Public School RK Puram, Pinki is from the national capital. She was introduced to lawn bowls in 2010 as her school created a lawn bowl green as a practice venue for the Commonwealth Games that year.

Pinki has previously represented India in lawn bowls in the 2014 and 2018 editions of the CWG event and also has multiple international medals against her name.
