The chess world is buzzing after GM Magnus Carlsen married Ella Victoria Malone on January 4, 2025. While Carlsen is a well-known figure in the chess community, his bride, Ella Victoria, remains less familiar to the public. However, over the past year, she has been increasingly seen alongside the World Chess Champion at various events.
Who Is Ella Victoria Malone?
Born in 1998, Ella Victoria, is 26 years old, and she comes with Norwegian and American roots. Although the couple has been dating for quite some time, their first public outing together was in February of 2024, when they did an appearance at the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge in Germany. After that, they were often seen together during the most prestigious tournaments in 2024: the Champions Chess Tour Finals held in Oslo, Norway, in December and also during the World Rapid and Blitz Championships held in New York City in December as well.

Carlsen and Malone’s marriage took place only days after the World Blitz Chess Championship title he shared with GM Ian Nepomniachtchi was clinched. The event could not have occurred at a better time to add flavor to an already monumental year of the chess champion.
“She is Understanding And Supportive”: Says Carlsen
In an interview with TV 2 during the Speed Chess Championship in September, Carlsen revealed the role Ella Victoria plays in his life. He said, “It’s very nice to have her with me. She is understanding and supportive. That’s nice and it’s good to have some distractions in case I don’t perform well.”
In an interview by The Strait Times, he also shared how Ella Victoria keeps on his demanding schedule. According to him, she can work along with his father to keep his commitments well-organized, thus letting him focus on his game while having balance in personal life.

Magnus Carlsen On His Future Plans
In an interview with The Guardian in October 2024, Carlsen said: “I will not live in Norway full-time because I do not want my future wife and children to also have to live under that pressure.” Meanwhile, she said that she is trying to convince Carlsen to buy a place in Singapore and added, “I prefer this; this is my home.”
