Who is Amol Muzumdar? The unsung cricketer who missed out on playing for India finds glory as World Cup winning coach

12 years after his retirement, Muzumdar has finally etched his name in the Indian cricket history as he became the architect behind the women's team World Cup success.

The India’s Women’s Cricket Team scripted history with a stunning win in the final against South Africa and won the ODI World Cup, lifting the maiden trophy. While the players performed exceptionally well in the match there was a man behind this success and it was none other than head coach Amol Muzumdar.

Amol Muzumdar played domestic cricketer and has over 11,000 runs in First-Class cricketer which included 30 centuries. He was one of the most prolific batter in the Ranji Trophy circuit but he never got a chance to represent India at the international level and it was largely due to the already playing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly in the middle order.

India’s journey wasn’t easy in the tournament as the Women in Blue lost three consecutive matches against South Africa, Australia and England in the group stage but they made a solid comeback and also registered a record-breaking chase defeating seven-time champions Australia in the semi-final.

Harmanpreet Kaur even revealed that Muzumdar gave the team some firm words and much needed motivation after three losses in the group stage. His leadership, tactical acumen, and calm approach helped rebuild confidence within the squad at a time when pressure was at its peak. Muzumdar took charge as India’s head coach in October 2023 after Ramesh Powar’s exit. He also has played a role of batting coach for Rajasthan Royals. He has also worked with India’s U-19 and U-23 squads, and even served as a batting consultant for the Netherlands, giving him a diverse coaching background.
