Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Ahead of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has emphasized the importance of taking on Jasprit Bumrah, one of the most formidable pacers in the world.
Marsh’s Key Strategy: Attacking vs Defending Against Bumrah
Marsh acknowledged that simply “seeing off” Jasprit Bumrah, often regarded as the best bowler in the world, could backfire. Instead, he emphasized that Australian batters must apply pressure and adapt their strategies during their innings.
“He is coming. When you have the best bowler in the world, if you are just trying to see him off, he is going to have one with your name on it. It is about applying pressure with your own method and taking the challenge on,” Marsh said during a pre-match press conference.
Marsh added that each player has their own approach to batting against such challenges, depending on the situation.

The Third Test at The Gabba: A Crucial Venue
With the series now level at 1-1, the next match will be held at The Gabba in Brisbane—a venue with historical significance for Indian cricket. During the 2020-21 tour, an inexperienced Indian side handed Australia their first Test defeat at The Gabba in over 32 years.
Marsh stressed the importance of adaptability and team strategy as they prepare for this important encounter.
Marsh’s Batting Record Against Bumrah
Marsh has scored 62 runs in two Tests and three innings so far, with a highest score of 47 runs. Notably, he is the only player in Australia’s top seven yet to be dismissed by Bumrah in the ongoing series.
His confidence stems from understanding the challenge and focusing on taking the game forward, rather than solely focusing on defense.

Bowling Workload: Managing Fitness and Expectations
Marsh has had to balance his bowling responsibilities with concerns about his fitness. After a strong performance of 17 overs and three wickets in Perth, he entered the Adelaide Test with a slightly sore body and managed just four overs in the first innings.
Marsh explained the importance of careful preparation and workload management, aided by captain Pat Cummins, head coach Andrew McDonald, and the medical team.
“We had a really clear plan before the series started. I did not bowl as much as I would have liked in the lead-up, but our medical staff, Ronnie (coach Andrew McDonald), and Patty were really clear on my preparation, and I trusted that. I have not had to bowl much so far, but my body is feeling really good. Right now, it feels as good as it has felt,” Marsh added.
Josh Hazlewood’s Potential Return Adds Depth to the Bowling Attack
Marsh also addressed the potential return of pacer Josh Hazlewood, who is recovering from a side strain. Hazlewood’s presence would significantly bolster Australia’s bowling attack ahead of the third Test.
“The great thing about Josh is that he’s a very level-headed character. He will do everything he can to be fit for the game, and then it is up to the leadership group and selectors to make the final decision,” Marsh said.
Hazlewood’s return would add experience and depth to a strong bowling unit, providing Australia with a much-needed boost as they head into the critical Brisbane clash.
Looking Ahead: Australia Aiming to Build on Momentum
Marsh’s comments underscore Australia’s strategy of balancing aggression and adaptability when facing challenges like Jasprit Bumrah and navigating key venues like The Gabba. With strong performances and strategic planning, the Australian team will aim to secure a series lead in the upcoming third Test.
