Considered one of the most outstanding players of his era, Ravichandran Ashwin has achieved remarkable success in Test cricket, showcasing exceptional skills in taking wickets. However, there is a segment of opinion that questions Ashwin’s suitability for white-ball cricket, viewing him as less dependable in limited-overs formats. Despite a somewhat unpredictable journey in ODIs and T20Is, Ashwin has been part of multiple World Cups in both formats. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, when addressing Ashwin’s performance in white-ball cricket, promptly expressed the view that the seasoned spinner “doesn’t merit” a place in India’s T20I and ODI squads.
During a conversation with the Times of India, Yuvraj emphasized Ashwin’s prowess in red-ball cricket but noted that the same level of excellence may not apply in limited-overs formats due to the unique demands they place on a player. According to Yuvraj, while Ashwin is an exceptional bowler, his contributions with the bat and in the field are not as substantial in white-ball cricket.

“Ashwin is a great bowler but I don’t think he deserves a place in ODIs and T20s. He is very good with the ball, but what does he bring with the bat? Or as a fielder? In the Test team, yes, he should be there. But in white-ball cricket, I don’t think he deserves a place,” Yuvraj said.
Yuvraj Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin were members of the Indian squad that secured victory in the ODI World Cup in 2011. Ashwin has consistently praised Yuvraj’s significant contributions to Indian cricket, particularly acknowledging the challenges Yuvraj faced during a health crisis.
In a video posted on Ashwin’s YouTube channel, he shared his astonishment upon learning about his diagnosis of cancer.
