India women’s cricket team clinched the historic gold medal at the ongoing 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou after beating Sri Lanka in the finals.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, India posted a total of 116-7 in 20 overs. Left-handed Smriti Mandhana, who played a knock of 46 runs, was the top-scorer for India while Jemimah Rodrigues also scored 42 runs.
In reply, Sri Lanka could only score 97 runs in 20 overs. Titas Sadhu picked three wickets while Rajeshwari Gayakwad picked two wickets for India. Eventually, India won the final match by 19 runs.
The Indian women’s team was taking part for the first time in the Asian Games and they managed to win the gold medal in their first attempt, which makes it very special.
As soon as India achieved the historic feat, many stalwarts of Indian cricket congratulated the women’s team on social media for the success.
Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar called the victory a remarkable achievement by the women’s cricket team.
“What a remarkable achievement by our Women’s Cricket Team! Winning gold at the Asian Games is an extraordinary feat. Continue to soar to greater heights!,” wrote Tendulkar on X (previously Twitter).

Former India opener Virender Sehwag congratulated the team on making the country proud.

On the other hand, Test cricket legend VVS Laxman also congratulated the team and called it a commendable win.
“Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Cricket team for winning the GOLD in their very first attempt at the Asian Games. To win a tight match against a formidable and in-form opposition at a venue where they have never played before is commendable. Here’s to many more to come!” wrote Laxman.
Meanwhile, the BCCI Women’s official X handle posted a picture of the team clicking selfies with the gold medal.

Apart from former cricketers, members of the winning team Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma also expressed themselves on social media.
“Proud to bring this home #AsianGames,” wrote Smriti along with the winning pictures.
“A very special night #AsianGames2023,” posted Shafali.
