WBBL 2024: Nicola Carey led the Hobart Hurricanes to a successful start in the WBBL 2024 season with a dynamic half-century, supported by an impressive bowling effort from her teammates. Carey’s quickfire 52 off 38 balls helped the Hurricanes post a total of 141, which proved too much for the Sydney Thunder, despite a spirited 51 from emerging star Phoebe Litchfield.
Strong Start for Sydney Thunder
Opting to bowl first, the Sydney Thunder began strongly, with Samantha Bates taking 3 wickets for just 20 runs. She dismissed Lizelle Lee early, putting the Hurricanes under pressure. However, Carey and Danni Wyatt-Hodge stabilized the innings with a crucial 44-run partnership. Carey then added another vital 39 runs with captain Elyse Villani, helping the Hurricanes reach a solid 92 for 2 in just 12 overs.

Hurricanes Struggle in Middle Overs
Bates made a significant impact again, taking two quick wickets and leaving the Hurricanes in a precarious position at 104 for 6. The innings continued to unravel, with the score slipping to 120 for 7. A valuable lower-order contribution from Tabatha Saville, who scored an unbeaten 23 off 16 balls, pushed the Hurricanes past the 140-run mark.
Thunder’s Chase Falters
The Thunder’s chase got off to a shocking start when veteran Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed LBW by Molly Strano on the very first ball. Lauren Smith struck twice during the PowerPlay, leaving the Thunder reeling at 38 for 4. Litchfield, alongside Anika Learoyd, attempted to revive the innings, adding 52 runs off just 39 balls. Litchfield’s aggressive batting included five fours and a six, bringing the required runs down to 53 off 42 balls.
Turning Point: Heather Graham’s Impact
Just as it seemed the Thunder might turn the game around, Heather Graham made a crucial breakthrough, stumping Litchfield with a wide delivery. At the same over, she dismissed Sammy-Jo Johnson, leading to a collapse for the Thunder. They lost 6 wickets for just 20 runs, ultimately falling short by 31 runs.
