With 64 percent possession and 15 shots, Al-Nassr clearly dominated the semi-final match. The Riyadh-based side could easily have a three-point lead within ten minutes of the game. But Al Shota’s Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Bashir made two decisive saves to keep his team alive in the tournament.
The second half began similarly, with Al-Nassr continuing to play very aggressively. The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute after Sadio Mane was fouled inside the penalty area by opposing center-back Faisal Jassim. Cristiano Ronaldo kept his cool and scored the winning goal. The Iraqi champions had a golden chance to equalize at the last minute, but Al Nasr goalkeeper Nawaf Arakidi made a decisive save to keep them clean.
After the game, Al-Nassr coach Luis Castro stressed the need to strengthen his side’s defense. “I asked the club for another foreign centre-back,” Castro said at the post-match press conference, according to Sportskeda.
Al Nasr failed to win a trophy last season, despite the high profile signing of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Saudi side are now aiming to end their trophy drought and win the Arab Club Champions Cup.
