On Thursday, Wanindu Hasaranga was named in Sri Lanka’s 16-member squad for the Asia Cup, set to take place in the UAE from September 9. Hasaranga is not included in the Sri Lanka team for their Zimbabwe tour, which starts with the first ODI in Harare on Friday, followed by one more ODI and three T20Is.
Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s home series loss against Bangladesh. He secures a spot in the Asia Cup squad, which also features young batters Kamil Mishara and Nuwanidu Fernando.
Alongside Hasaranga, Sri Lanka have included spin bowling options Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana. After a significant defeat to India in the 2023 Asia Cup final, held in ODI format on home soil, Sri Lanka are placed in Group B with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. They will play Bangladesh on September 13, Hong Kong on September 15, and Afghanistan on September 18 before the Super Four stage.
