Matthew Hayden believes that Virat Kohli has a strong chance of surpassing his own performance from the 2016 IPL season in the 2024 edition of the tournament. Eight years ago, Kohli set the record for the most runs in a single IPL season, amassing 973 runs from 16 games with an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03, including four centuries and seven fifties.
Matthew Hayden ” Don’t ‘needle’ players like Virat Kohli, they just get better.Virat has copped a bit of criticism around the strike-rate.I love the way that it’s fueled his fire and fueled some improvement.A dangerous athlete is one that’s been wounded.”pic.twitter.com/doRX3VxQYo

“We are looking at Virat Kohli celebrating his second-best season thus far. He could go well past his IPL 2016 performance in the kind of form that he’s in. So more than anything, I just think it’s the energy and the love of the game, the passion, the commitment for it all—all of those describing words that you can glorify this great man with, whether it be on the field or with the bat in hand. He just loves it; it’s crazy,” Hayden told Star Sports.
Virat Kohli To Breach 1000-Run Mark?
Currently holding the Orange Cap in IPL 2024, Kohli has been instrumental in RCB’s journey to the playoffs. In a crucial match against CSK, Kohli scored 47 runs, helping his team secure a 27-run victory at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Hayden commended Kohli for his intensity on the field.
Kohli needs 266 more runs to break his record from 2016. If RCB reaches the final, Kohli will have three matches to achieve this milestone.
Hayden also praised Kohli for his spirited gestures towards the CSK fans during the match. Kohli’s efforts were pivotal as RCB won six consecutive matches to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
Kohli’s next appearance will be in the Eliminator against Sanju Samson’s RR on Wednesday, May 22, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
