In the lead-up to finalizing the T20 World Cup 2024 squad, the BCCI convened discussions with Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid, and Ajit Agarkar in Mumbai. Various positions were under review, notably those of Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya. The ongoing debate over Kohli’s strike-rate has intensified during the IPL 2024, while Hardik’s inconsistent batting form and sporadic bowling performances have been cause for concern.

According to reports, during the BCCI meeting in Mumbai, Virat Kohli sought clarity regarding his role in the upcoming T20 World Cup. With Yashasvi Jaiswal experiencing a dip in form during the IPL, Kohli has allegedly been requested to open the batting alongside captain Rohit Sharma in the tournament, which is scheduled to begin in June, as stated in a report.
Virat Kohli is a regular opener for his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and is currently the top-scoring batter in the tournament. Therefore, the selection committee views the opening role as ideal for the experienced batsman. Shubman Gill, who has shown good form this season, is reportedly being considered as the backup opening option for the T20 World Cup.

In T20I cricket, Virat Kohli boasts a strike-rate of 161 as an opening batsman, significantly higher than his overall strike-rate of 138. Interestingly, Kohli’s only T20I century has also been scored while opening the innings.
Kohli’s potential inclusion as an opener could potentially limit the opportunities for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Indian team. However, there is still time before the BCCI selection committee finalizes the T20 World Cup roster. During this period, Jaiswal will aim to regain his form and strengthen his case for consideration as an opening batsman in the team.
