IPL 2025: Batting superstar Virat Kohli is reportedly in discussions with his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), about potentially being reappointed as captain for the upcoming season. Kohli stepped down from the captaincy before IPL 2022, handing over the reins to South African cricketer Faf du Plessis. Since the IPL’s inception in 2008, RCB has reached the finals three times but has finished as runners-up each time.
Kohli’s Legacy With RCB
Kohli captained RCB from 2013 to 2021, leading the team to the final in 2016, where they were defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Under du Plessis, RCB has made the playoffs twice in three seasons, although they finished sixth in one campaign. With the 40-year-old du Plessis nearing the end of his playing career, the franchise appears to be turning back to their former captain.

RCB’s Future Plans
In addition to considering Kohli’s return, RCB has shown interest in acquiring Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill and is likely to bid for Rishabh Pant if he is released by his current franchise, Delhi Capitals.
Kohli is one of the greatest IPL batsmen, holding the record for the most runs in the tournament’s history. Since the IPL began, the 35-year-old has accumulated 8,004 runs from 252 matches, boasting a strike rate of 131.97 along with eight centuries and 55 fifties.
Kohli Reflects On His IPL Journey
Kohli has previously shared his thoughts about potentially playing for another IPL franchise, revealing that he has been approached by several teams. “To be very honest, I have thought about it,” Kohli stated in a podcast. He emphasized the unique bond he has with RCB, acknowledging the franchise’s early belief in his talent.
“What this franchise has given me in terms of opportunity in the first three years and believed in me, that is the most special thing,” he remarked. Kohli’s loyalty to RCB is evident, as he values the support he received when other teams overlooked him.
