Delhi’s preparations for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy just received a major boost, with Virat Kohli confirming his participation in the domestic one-day tournament. The 37-year-old has been named in Delhi’s list of probables and is expected to feature in their opening match against Andhra Pradesh on December 24 in Alur.
For weeks, there had been speculation about whether Kohli would play the VHT, especially after the BCCI made it mandatory for players to take part in domestic cricket. Now, that cloud has finally cleared.
Kohli’s surprise return to domestic cricket
The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) announced its probables list recently, one that also features Rishabh Pant. DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma confirmed Kohli’s availability and praised the senior batter’s commitment.
“Virat Kohli has confirmed to the DDCA today that he will play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Though he has nothing to prove, it shows he still retains passion for the game,” Sharma told The Indian Express. “His recent hundred against South Africa shows he’s still one of the best players in the world. Him playing the domestic tournament will be a motivation for the youngsters.”

This will be the first time in 15 years that Kohli plays in the VHT, and the timing couldn’t be better. He’s in terrific form, with his last five scores reading: 0, 74, 135, 102, 65, a clear sign that he’s still hitting the ball as sweetly as ever.
Pant‘s return also in cards
Rishabh Pant has also been included in Delhi’s probables. For the wicketkeeper-batter, this tournament could be a crucial platform to grab the selectors’ attention again. He’s still fighting to cement a regular place in India’s ODI setup, and strong domestic performances could help his case.
Pant last played the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2019 and has only featured in four matches in the competition so far. With Delhi starting their VHT journey on December 24, it might just be the right opportunity for him to remind everyone what he’s capable of.
Delhi eye a strong start in Alur
Delhi’s first match against Andhra Pradesh in Alur suddenly carries a lot more buzz. With Kohli’s return after a decade and a half and Pant potentially looking to make a statement, the team will have a blend of superstar experience and young hunger.
