The situation has hit another deadlock as the final deadline for Vinesh Phogat’s verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has been extended to August 11. There won’t be any confirmation until the end of the Paris Olympics.

On Friday, August 9, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) held a three-hour hearing in Paris to assess Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification from the Olympics. Vinesh, who attended the session virtually, presented her case in an effort to overturn the decision. The CAS, an independent body dedicated to resolving sports-related disputes, officially registered her appeal and scheduled the hearing for Friday evening.

Weight Limit Exceeded by 100 Grams

During the hearing, Vinesh’s legal team argued that her disqualification was not due to any fraudulent activity but rather because she exceeded the weight limit by 100 grams during the weigh-in prior to her gold medal match in the women’s 50kg wrestling category on Wednesday, August 7. Vinesh was represented by senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, both well-versed in advocating for athletes. The hearing was overseen by Dr. Annabelle Bennett from Australia, acting as the Sole Arbitrator.
