Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title in style by dominating the US Open on Sunday night. The 38-year-old Serb defeated American teenage sensation Learner Tien in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6, 6-2, under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights.
Even though the world No. 2 needed a medical timeout to take care of what seemed to be a blister on his right foot, he bounced back quickly to complete the task in a little more than two hours.
Serbian Legend Off To Fast Start
Djokovic did not waste any time establishing himself in the match. Making sharp movement and sharp shots, he ruled over the opening set 6-1, leaving the 19-year-old newcomer grasping at straws.
Tien’s Second Set Comeback
The second set, though, was another matter. Djokovic’s rhythm stuttered and Tien almost took advantage. The American youngster was given an opportunity to level the match when he created a break point at 5-4 but blew it. Djokovic righted his service then pushed it into a tiebreak, showcasing his trademark alternating net play with strategic shot variety to clinch the set.
Medical Timeout and Quick Recovery
During the transition to the third set, Djokovic took a medical timeout to receive treatment for his foot. The short break seemed to refresh him, and he quickly jumped to a 5-1 advantage, taking rallies away from Tien and making him play defense.
Closing Out the Match
Tien demonstrated staying power by coming from a match point down and then breaking Djokovic’s serve to lead 5-2. Any illusions of a prolonged comeback, however, were short-lived as Djokovic broke right back to take the victory in straight sets.
Next Challenge Awaits
With the win, Djokovic advanced into the second round, where he’ll face American qualifier Zachary Svajda. While there were moments of rust following a month away from competitive tennis skipping Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati Djokovic also produced moments of the brilliance in US Open that has come to characterize his outstanding career.
