Defending champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner secured his place in the fourth round of the US Open 2025 after a gritty four-set win against 27th seed Denis Shapovalov on Saturday, August 30. Jannik Sinner recovered from a sluggish start to claim 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 and extend his hardcourt major winning streak to a remarkable 24 matches.

Early Struggle but No Panic from the Top Seed

Sinner was forced to dig deep in the first set, especially when a double fault put him down 0-30 when serving at 2-5. But the Italian battled back from the brink, and wowed the Arthur Ashe crowd with an absolute whirlie of a lob. Nevertheless, the Canadian converted a fourth double fault by Sinner to take the first set,eliciting loud gasps from the stadium.

Composed Response from the Champion

Sinner adjusted after losing the first set. He equalized the match with a good second set, breaking Shapovalov and holding serve from there. In the third set, the Italian demonstrated his champion spirit, fighting his way back from a 0-3 hole to win six games in a row and assume the lead in the match for the very first time.

Sinner Seals It, Shapovalov Frustrated

With momentum in his favor, Sinner persisted in dominating the fourth set. A visibly agitated Shapovalov showed his frustration scoffing fist-pumping and glancing over toward his support box but it wasn’t sufficient to throw Sinner off his game. The 24-year-old broke again and completed the match in fashion, sustaining his unbeaten record at hardcourt Slams since 2023.

Waiting for Paul or Bublik in the Fourth Round

In the victory, Sinner advances to play either American Tommy Paul or Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the round of 16. The Italian, a two-time Australian Open champion and current US Open champion, looks every bit as good on his preferred surface.
