List of Indian boxers at Commonwealth Games 2022 who are medal hopes

Amit Panghal

Amit made a mark by winning bronze at the 2017 Asian championships and a gold at Grand Prix Usti nad Labem. Medals at Strandja (gold), Commonwealth Games (silver), Chemistry Cup (bronze) and Asian Games (gold) in 2018 and Strandja (gold), Asian championships (gold) and the World championships (silver) in 2019 elevated the boxer’s status. He was the first Indian male to achieve a Worlds silver.

His early exit at the Olympics disappointed Panghal, who looks to redeem some pride at the Commonwealth Games.

Sanjeet

Sanjeet has built a reputation of being a giant-killer. In 2018, defeated Worlds bronze medalist Kazakh boxer Sanjar Tursunov in the India Open final. Sanjeet made the headlines by toppling Rio Olympics silver medallist Vassily Levit of Kazakhstan on his way to win the Asian title.

Sanjeet is fit to fight in CWG 2022 after recovering from two surgeries on his biceps.

Nikhat Zareen

The 26-year-old Nikhat Zareen has broken all stereotypes and records. She clinched the crown of World Champion in Turkey earlier this year. Only five Indian women have reached the top of podium of World Boxing Championship.

Nikhat would be amongst the favorites to win a gold medal in boxing after she got a 5-0 victory over Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the flyweight category earlier this year to win the gold at the World Championships.

Lovlina Borgohain

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist, Lovlina Borgohain is a trained martial artist in the Thai form called ‘Muay Thai’. Borgohain has faced certain training difficulties in the Commonwealth Village ahead of the games involving non-entry to her coach Sandhya Gurung.

India hopes that the bad experience doesn’t dwell on her mind when she enters the ring on July 30.
