According to reports surfacing in the media, Shubman Gill is being seriously considered to take over the ODI captaincy role for India on the upcoming tour of Australia. This speculation gains traction amid concerns over Rohit Sharma’s fitness and the need to plan for the future leadership structure.
Gill, who has not yet captained India in ODIs, has nevertheless built a strong reputation across formats. As of now, he’s the Test captain, having replaced Virat Kohli and Rohit in the longer format. His rise reflects the selectors’ trust in his temperament, cricketing acumen, and leadership potential.

However, the idea of Gill skipping straight into ODI captaincy is not without its challenges. Rohit Sharma remains a strong leader in the 50-over format, and many see the transition needing careful timing. Also, as one source noted, Gill’s busy schedule and multi-format commitments might work against an immediate ODI captaincy appointment.

Historically, India has preferred continuity in white-ball captaincies. Still, this is a period of transition. The BCCI has already initiated a shift in Test leadership, and an ODI handover could be next. Already, Gill has been trusted in proxy captaincy roles – for instance, when Rohit was rested during the Champions Trophy, Gill stepped in.
If Gill is indeed handed the reins for the Australia tour, it would signal a bold move by the BCCI: ushering in a younger generation of leadership ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. With Gill already captaining India in Tests and leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL, the decision would reflect a long-term vision more than just a stop-gap.
Ultimately, the official confirmation lies in the hands of the selection committee. But should Gill take on the ODI captaincy, it would mark a pivotal moment in Indian cricket’s evolving leadership transition.
