The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, approached the apex court seeking an increase in the monthly maintenance allowance for herself and their daughter.
Jahan has challenged a previous order by the Calcutta High Court, which had directed Shami to pay a total of Rs 4 lakh per month – Rs 1.5 lakh for Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter. In her latest plea, she argued that the amount was insufficient, considering Shami’s current income, assets, and lifestyle.
During the preliminary hearing, a bench of the Supreme Court remarked, “Isn’t Rs 4 lakh per month already a lot of money?” Despite this observation, the court has sought detailed responses from both Shami and the state government within four weeks. The case is scheduled to be heard again in December.

Hasin Jahan’s Argument
Representing Jahan, her counsel contended that the Indian pacer’s actual income and property holdings are far greater than reflected in the High Court’s maintenance assessment. “The husband earns a substantial amount. His assets run into hundreds of crores, he owns luxury cars, travels abroad frequently, and leads an extravagant lifestyle,” her lawyer stated before the court.
The petition further claimed that Shami had defaulted on maintenance payments on several occasions despite clear orders from both the family court and the Calcutta High Court. Jahan maintained that she was not demanding a personal share in her husband’s earnings but was seeking a better standard of living for their daughter.
“The child deserves to live with dignity and have access to education and opportunities similar to what her father’s financial status allows. She should be able to study in good schools, interact with the children of her father’s peers, and enjoy a secure upbringing,” the plea emphasized.
A Continuing Legal Battle
This latest development adds another chapter to the long-standing legal and personal conflict between Shami and Jahan, which began in 2018 when Jahan accused the cricketer of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and infidelity. The dispute has since played out in both the courts and the public eye, often making headlines.
Despite the controversies surrounding his personal life, Mohammed Shami has maintained focus on his cricketing career. The Indian speedster, who remains a vital part of the national setup across formats, has largely refrained from commenting on the matter. In an earlier interview, he said, “I don’t regret the past. What’s gone is gone. I don’t want to blame anyone – not even myself. I just want to focus on cricket.”
As the Supreme Court’s notice sets the stage for the next hearing, both Shami and the West Bengal government have been directed to submit their replies within four weeks. The outcome of this case will likely determine the future financial arrangement between the cricketer and his estranged family.
