SRH batter Abhishek Sharma has surpassed Indian and RCB star Virat Kohli’s eight-year-old record for the most sixes in a single IPL season by an Indian player. The 23-year-old achieved this milestone during his team’s match against PBKS in Match 69 of IPL 2024 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

Sharma eclipsed Kohli’s record with an 82-metre six off Rishi Dhawan in the sixth over of the second innings. This six marked Abhishek’s 39th of the season, surpassing Kohli’s previous record of 38 sixes set in the 2016 season.

After losing his opening partner Travis Head on the first ball of the innings, the Punjab-born cricketer took charge, notching up a half-century in just 21 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 66 off 28 balls, which included five fours and six sixes, leaving SRH at 129/3 after 10.1 overs while chasing a target of 215.

During his innings, Abhishek also surpassed his previous best runs tally in a season, which was 426, achieved in the 2022 edition. The SRH opener has now scored 467 runs from 13 innings, with an average of 38.91 and an impressive strike rate of 209.41. Along with his 39 sixes, he has also hit 35 fours and recorded three half-centuries.

This season, Abhishek has formed a formidable opening partnership with Travis Head, consistently dismantling opposing bowling attacks. Meanwhile, Kohli is close on Abhishek’s heels, having smashed 37 sixes this season from 14 matches. Kohli is eager to reclaim his record as RCB prepares for the Eliminator game.

The RCB opener has been in remarkable form this season, being the highest run-scorer with 708 runs from 14 innings at an average of 64.36 and a strike rate of 155.60, including one century and five fifties.
