Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s appointment as the new Test captain. Gill will lead the national team in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, with Rishabh Pant named as his deputy. Gavaskar highlighted that Gill will need to earn the respect of his teammates and manage the significant pressure that comes with the role.
Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Gill was chosen as captain ahead of other contenders like Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul. Gavaskar added that captaincy changes the dynamics within the team, and Gill must carry himself in a way that asserts his authority.
“There is always pressure on the player who gets elected as India’s captain because being captain is very different from being just a team member,” Gavaskar said, as quoted by Sports Tak. “As a player, you usually interact closely with a few teammates, but as a captain, you need to earn respect from the entire squad. How a captain behaves is often more important than his individual performance.”

As Shubman Gill steps into his new leadership role ahead of the highly anticipated series against England, former cricketer Yograj Singh has praised the key figures behind Gill’s rise – his father and Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh.
Speaking to ANI, Yograj Singh emphasized the importance of strong mentorship and family support in shaping Gill’s journey. “The credit for Shubman Gill’s success goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” he said. “If Gill has become captain today and is set to lead for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance has been crucial.”
Yograj Singh, a former India international and Yuvraj Singh’s father, underlined how Yuvraj’s cricketing insight has helped Gill develop both as a player and as a leader. “Having someone like Yuvraj Singh – the greatest cricketing mind – mentoring Gill is a huge advantage,” he added.
