Former Indian Team captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced is opinion on Shubman Gill’s innings against South Africa in the ongoing Test Series.
“I think he is playing a bit too aggressively in Test cricket. There is a slight difference when you play Test cricket when compared to T20I and ODI cricket. The difference is in the ball. The red ball moves a little more than the white ball in the air and off the pitch as well. It bounces a little more too. He should keep that in mind.” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
“Shubman Gill started off his career so well and we praised his shots. We can only hope that he gets back into his form. Hope he trains harder and does well in the future.” he added
Gill faced consecutive disappointments in Centurion during the first Test against South Africa. In the first innings, he was caught down the leg side while attempting to glance a wide delivery from Nandre Burger on a challenging pitch. In the second innings, he was bowled by Marco Jansen while attempting to play across the line. Batting at No. 3, Gill managed scores of 2 and 26 in the match.

Team India’s performance in South Africa has been unimpressive so far and the visitors will be looking to make amends going into the 2nd Test on January 3.
This marked the third successive year in 2023 where he ended with a Test average of under 30.
Although he excelled in limited-overs cricket this year with remarkable statistics – scoring 1584 runs in ODIs at an average of 63.36 and a strike rate of 105.45, along with 1202 runs in T20s at an average and strike rate of 44.51 and 154.30 respectively – his performance in Test matches hasn’t been particularly noteworthy. Out of his ten innings, he only managed to surpass the 30-run mark once, scoring a century against Australia on a flat Ahmedabad pitch.
