Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar praised Rohit Sharma for leading the team to victory in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, calling him a people’s captain, similar to MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev. Rohit, who was part of India’s winning teams in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, had previously come close as a captain, finishing as runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship.

Sunil Gavaskar Lauds Rohit Sharma For Being Selfless

“Well liked, not only by his team members, but by the entire Indian cricketing community. The cricket fans also love his laconic style of leadership and tactically, he is as good as the sharpest in the game. Some of his moves can surprise you and make you scratch your head as to the reason, but the end result is more often than not exactly what the team needed at that moment,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for mid-day on Sunday.

“He led from the front, showing a complete disregard for personal milestones and instead looked to get the team off to a flying start every time. India are blessed to have him as their captain,” added Gavaskar.

However, he finally achieved his destiny when India defeated South Africa by seven runs to win the T20 World Cup at Kensington Oval last month.

After announcing his retirement from T20I cricket, Rohit declared the 2024 T20 World Cup win, which India secured as an unbeaten team, as the greatest achievement of his playing career. Gavaskar remarked, “Rohit Sharma joins those other two cricketing giants, Kapil Dev and Dhoni, in captaining India to a World Cup trophy. Like them, Rohit is also a people’s captain.”

During the tournament, Rohit scored 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70, consistently providing India with fast starts, including crucial fifties against Australia and England.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
