India’s football legend Sunil Chhetri is all set to make a comeback as India gears up to face Bangladesh in the third round of qualifiers for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 on March 25. The 40-year old champion who announced his international retirement last year make a U-turn by rejoining the national squad for India’s very important matches.
Why Did Sunil Chhetri Come Out Of Retirement?
Head coach Manolo Marquez included Chhetri in India’s squad for the March FIFA international window. The Spanish coach highlighted that spoke to Chhetri and the possibility of comeback considering India’s deep challenges.
“The qualification for the Asian Cup is very crucial for us. Given the importance of the tournament and the matches ahead, I discussed with Sunil Chhetri about making a comeback to strengthen the national team. He agreed, and so we have included him in the squad,” he is quoted as saying in the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) statement.

India’s Disappointing Run In Previous AFC Asian Cup
In the previous edition of AFC Asian Cup, India endured a disappointing group-stage exit, losing all their matches. With Chhetri back in the squad the team will be looking around to bounce back stronger for the 2027 tournament in Saudi Arabia.
With Chhetri back he has the golden opportunity to join an elite list of players who have scored 100 international goals, a feat achieved by Ronaldo, Messi and Daei.
