In the aftermath of the Championship Trophy semifinals against India at the semifinals, Australia skipper Steve Smith announced his retirement from the ODI format. Although he will continue to play for the Australian side in the T20 and Test competitions, after losing by a narrow margin to India in Dubai it seems like this was the last run for the Aussies.
It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said via a statement from Cricket Australia on Wednesday.
“There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey.” He said.
2017 Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Apart from the infamous sandpaper incident, Steve Smith has been involved in other controversies that included India as well. Smith captained India in the 2017 Border-Gavaskar trophy which India won by a barest margin of 2-1. The series is marked by Smith’s brainfade in the second Test in Bengaluru. In the same contest, Smith was dismissed by LBW by Indian pacer Umesh Yadav. After a quick discussion with his partner at the crease, Peter Handscomb, he looked at the Australian dressing room to ask for a review of the LBW decision or not. Indian skipper quickly intervened and Smith declined the review after coming into address for the matter. He later admitted that his actions were a “brainfade”, a momentary lapse in judgment.
Accused of removing Rishabh Pant’s guard mark
During the 2021 Border Gavaskar trophy, smith was accused of accused of removing Rishabh Pant’s guard mask during the Sydney Test. Pant was a significant part of the and was a key for the fractured Indian innings. During the game. a video went viral that displayed Steve Smith doing some shadow batting during the drinks break, thus removing the guard mark, and forcing Pant to retake the same. He was later lambasted for his actions.
