In anticipation of the upcoming Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has made a bold move by relieving teenager David Teeger of his captaincy for the U19 team. The decision stems from Teeger’s pro-Israel remarks last year, where he expressed support for Israeli soldiers in their conflict with Palestine. CSA took this step due to concerns about the potential for “conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protestors.”
While David remains part of the squad, he will not be leading the team in the tournament. CSA’s decision was made “in the best interests of all the players, the SA U-19 team, and David himself.”
Following an independent inquiry commissioned by Cricket South Africa (CSA) last month to investigate Teeger’s comments, the player for the Lions was cleared of any breaches of the organization’s code of conduct.
In October of the previous year, during the acceptance of his award as the inaugural Rising Star of the Absa Jewish Achiever Awards, Teeger, who is Jewish, dedicated the award to the young Israel Defense Forces soldiers involved in the conflict in Gaza.
