Indian team’s opening batsman, Shubhman Gill, is currently battling dengue fever and has been hospitalized in Chennai. Consequently, he will not be able to participate in the match against Afghanistan scheduled for October 11 in Delhi. Gill was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on Monday morning and is under the observation of medical experts. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) doctor, Rizwan Khan, who is accompanying the team, is also overseeing the young opener’s care.
Cricbuzz reports that Shubman Gill’s platelet count has been low for some time, which led to his absence from the team’s trip to Delhi for their second match of the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan. Medical advice suggested avoiding air travel with a low platelet count. BCCI issued a statement on Monday, confirming Gill’s unavailability for the Delhi match and his stay in Chennai under medical supervision. He had also missed the first match.
BCCI’s statement read, “Team India batsman Shubman Gill will not travel with the team to Delhi on October 9, 2023. The opening batsman, who did not play in the team’s first match in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai, will not be available for the team’s next match against Afghanistan, scheduled for October 11. He will remain in Chennai and be under the observation of the medical team.” This comes as a significant setback for Team India.
Since arriving in Chennai on October 4, many members of the Indian team had not seen Gill. He remained at the team hotel, where doctors from Kauvery Hospital conducted blood tests and monitored his platelet count. It remains uncertain whether Gill will be fit for the highly anticipated match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Gill’s absence was felt on Sunday when his replacement, Ishan Kishan, returned to the pavilion without scoring. Gill has a strong record in Ahmedabad.
