In a big blow to Team India on the eve of the Asia Cup 2025, star opener and Test skipper Shubman Gill was today ruled out of the Duleep Trophy because of an unexpected viral fever. The 25-year-old, who was also included as vice-captain of the T20I team for the tournament, has been put on complete rest after his medical tests confirmed the infection.

Gill, who is famous for his refined stroke play and increasing reputation as one of India's most reliable batters, was poised to have an important role at the top of the order. His unavailability not only mars India's batting unit but also throws the leadership dynamics out of gear since he was also going to function hand-in-hand with skipper Suryakumar Yadav in leading the fledgling side.

Ruled Out of Duleep Trophy Too

Before the announcement of the Asia Cup, Gill was also set to lead North Zone during the Duleep Trophy. He had to opt out of that task as well, though, due to his illness. His abrupt lack of availability now has selectors scrambling for back-ups, both for the domestic tournament and the next international assignment.

Medical Reports Offer Hope

Whereas Gill has been eliminated from taking action in the near future, there is some good news for Indian fans. His blood tests confirm that he should be back at practice shortly, which means he is once again a contender for India's upcoming matches.

Fans Rally Behind 'Prince of Indian Cricket'

Gill has built a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket, especially following his brilliant performances in the Test series against England during the first half of this year. Social media has been inundated with messages wishing him a quick recovery with fans expecting that he will be fit for the big jobs later this year.

India's Asia Cup run now comes under early scrutiny as they attempt to adapt in the absence of their vice-captain. Who will take his place at the number one spot is yet to be determined, but this much is certain - Gill's loss will be felt on the field as well as off it.
