In what could be a significant development in Indian cricket’s transition phase, young India star Shubman Gill has hinted that veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may still be in contention for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
With both Rohit and Kohli in their late 30s, speculation has been swirling around their international futures, especially after India’s World Cup campaign in 2023 and their roles in recent series. However, speaking on the matter, Gill made it clear that the experience of the two legends is still invaluable to the team.
“The experience that they have and the matches they have won for India is really valuable. Very few players provide this skill and experience. They are definitely in the mix,” Gill said.
His statement suggests that team management is keeping all options open and not ruling out the inclusion of seasoned campaigners for the next big ICC event in 2027, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
At a time when India is nurturing a new generation of cricketers – many of whom are under 25 – Gill’s acknowledgement of the veterans underlines the importance of striking a balance between youth and experience.
Why Rohit and Kohli Still Matter
Both players have been monumental figures in Indian cricket over the past decade. Rohit Sharma, with multiple double hundreds in ODIs, and Virat Kohli, one of the game’s greatest chasers, still maintain elite fitness levels and continue to perform when called upon. Their presence could offer not just batting depth, but also priceless leadership experience in high-pressure situations.
The idea of grooming the next generation under the watchful eyes of these senior pros may be exactly the kind of blend India needs as it eyes another world title.
For now, nothing is official – but Gill’s comments are a strong indicator that the door is far from closed for two of India’s modern-day greats.
