Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a strong contender for India’s white-ball captaincy following a standout season in IPL 2025, where he led Punjab Kings to a memorable campaign that saw them finish as runners-up. His leadership and batting form have reportedly caught the attention of top decision-makers within the BCCI.
BCCI Official Acknowledges Iyer’s Rising Stock
With Indian cricket entering a transitional phase after the retirement of stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20Is and Test cricket, new leadership options are being closely evaluated. Iyer, currently a mainstay in India’s ODI squad, has not been a regular feature in Tests or T20Is in recent times.
However, according to a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI is now seriously considering Iyer for a return to both red and white-ball formats beyond ODIs. A senior BCCI official reportedly told the publication that Iyer is now officially part of the race for India’s future white-ball captaincy.
“Right now, he’s only part of the ODI squad, but after his IPL performance, we can’t overlook him for T20Is or even Tests. He’s also now officially in the white-ball captaincy race,” the official was quoted as saying on the eve of the IPL 2025 final.
Leadership Pedigree and On-Field Success
Iyer’s recent leadership track record in the IPL has been exceptional. After captaining Kolkata Knight Riders to their IPL title win in 2024, he took charge of Punjab Kings and led them to the final in 2025, underlining his consistency as a captain and performer. His elegant strokeplay and calm demeanor under pressure have made a strong case for his inclusion across formats and possibly, a leadership role at the national level.
With Indian cricket looking to groom its next generation of leaders, Iyer’s recent success could prove pivotal in shaping his future in the national setup.
