Even though the IPL 2024 hasn’t kicked off and players haven’t had a chance to shine in T20 matches, there’s talk that Virat Kohli’s spot in the Indian T20 World Cup squad might be in jeopardy. A report suggested that some tough decisions could be in store for the team management and selectors ahead of the tournament in the West Indies and the USA.
While his exclusion from the team isn’t guaranteed, a strong performance in the IPL could sway the selectors. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already announced Rohit Sharma as the captain for the World Cup. Ultimately, the decision on whether Kohli secures a spot will be up to Ajit Agarkar.

According to a source, the situation “remains a very delicate matter, and not many are willing to get involved.”
Conversely, Team India boasts a deep pool of batters including Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Shivam Dube, alongside Hardik Pandya, who can step up when required. It’s also reported that Agarkar has had discussions with Kohli about his T20 approach.
According to the report, the slow wickets in WI and the USA may not favor Kohli’s style of play. Players have apparently been shortlisted, with uncertainty surrounding the wicket-keeper’s role. It appears there will be a contest between KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, and if Rahul is fit, he is likely to secure the spot. These uncertainties are expected to persist until the provisional squad is submitted to the ICC in May.
