With the T20 World Cup 2024 just days away now, rumours are indicating another big shift in terms of leadership roles which might take place after the quadrennial tournament. The change could see hitman Rohit Sharma bid farewell to the shortest format of the game for his national side as well.
Team India skipper Rohit Sharma may soon retire from T20Is, with reports suggesting that he could make this decision after the T20 World Cup. The decision is reportedly influenced by Hardik Pandya’s inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad, not solely based on his performances but also because the BCCI sees him as a potential future T20I captain.

Hardik Pandya To Replace Rohit Sharma As Skipper?
There seems to be tension between Rohit and Hardik at Mumbai Indians, particularly after Rohit was replaced as captain by Hardik last year. Despite leading Gujarat Titans to consecutive finals, Hardik’s return to MI came at a high price. The announcement of Hardik as captain of MI brought an abrupt end to Rohit’s decade-long captaincy.
It’s suggested that both fans and players haven’t fully embraced Hardik’s leadership. While overseas players may not have issues with him as captain, domestic players still look up to Rohit. Discussions about Hardik’s captaincy reportedly took place within the MI team after their early elimination from the IPL 2024 playoffs, with Rohit and Jasprit Bumrah reportedly expressing their concerns. Additionally, Hardik’s handling of young talent, such as Tilak Varma, has caused discontent among players, especially the younger ones.
