BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced on Sunday that Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from T20Is after leading India to the T20 World Cup title in the USA and West Indies, will captain the team in two major upcoming events next year.
Rohit Sharma To Continue As team India Skipper In 2025
Sharma will lead India in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February and the World Test Championship final at Lord's in London in June, where Shah hopes India will emerge victorious.
In a video statement, Shah expressed his congratulations to Team India for their historic win, dedicating the triumph to skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid, and Ravindra Jadeja. He noted, "This was our third final in the past year. We lost to Australia at the Oval in June 2023. In November 2023, we won 10 matches in the ODI World Cup and won the hearts of the people, but fell short in the final against Australia. In February, I said in Rajkot that in June 2024, we would win both the hearts of the people and the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, and we did it.
Our captain achieved this. The last five overs of the South African innings were crucial to our victory. I want to thank Suryakumar Yadav for his catch to dismiss David Miller, Jasprit Bumrah for his game-changing over, Arshdeep Singh for his economical second-last over, and Hardik Pandya for bowling the final over. Our next targets are the WTC final and the Champions Trophy."
Interestingly, it was Jay Shah who had announced in February in Rajkot that Rohit would lead India in the 2024 T20 World Cup, predicting India's championship win.
