The speculation around Rohit Sharma’s pre-season fitness routine is about to be put to rest. India’s ODI skipper, who now focuses exclusively on the 50-over format, is scheduled to undergo a mandatory fitness test today (August 30) at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Joining him will be senior teammates Jasprit Bumrah and Test captain Shubman Gill, while questions remain over the availability of Virat Kohli for this assessment. The tests come just weeks before the Asia Cup 2025, setting the tone for India’s upcoming cricketing season.
Yo-Yo Test Takes Centre Stage
While reports of a new “Bronco Test” have been doing the rounds recently – thanks to India’s strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux – the traditional Yo-Yo test will remain the primary benchmark this time. The Bronco Test, which is widely used in rugby to assess endurance, is likely to be introduced later in the season.
For now, players will go through the tried-and-tested Yo-Yo drill, a staple of Indian cricket’s fitness regime in recent years. Alongside this, Dexa Scans – used to monitor bone density will also be conducted to ensure players meet the physical demands of a grueling season ahead.
Why These Tests Matter
A BCCI official, speaking to Indian Express, shed light on the significance of these assessments.
“All players have to undergo a pre-season fitness test; it’s mandatory as per the contract. These tests help the CoE understand the areas the players need to work on. Since there was a long break after the England Test series, players were given specific home exercises to stay in shape,” the official explained.
The fitness program covers endurance (Yo-Yo), sprinting speed, explosive power, and bone strength, helping the staff set performance benchmarks for the season.
Setting the Tone for a Big Season
With the Asia Cup just around the corner, followed by the high-voltage ICC Champions Trophy and a packed international schedule, these fitness checks are critical. For Rohit Sharma and his squad, this is not just about meeting numbers – it’s about fine-tuning their bodies for the demands of modern cricket.
The coming weeks will reveal who clears these benchmarks with ease and who might have to put in extra work. But one thing is clear – India wants to start the season with peak fitness and zero uncertainties.
