Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20I cricket following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory in Barbados. The next day, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also announced his retirement from the shortest format, signaling a shift towards younger talent.
However, all three players remain dedicated to representing India in ODIs and Tests. BCCI secretary Jay Shah acknowledged India’s transition phase in cricket and suggested that Virat and Rohit could feature in the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.
‘The transition has already occurred with the retirement of three greats,’ Shah informed reporters, noting the exits of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20I cricket.
‘Our goal is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy with the current squad, including senior players.’
